How fast can you drive over a speed bump?
Short answer
5 to 10 mph. A speed bump packs a 2–4 in rise into 12–15 in of travel, so the crossing is abrupt by design. A speed hump, at 10–14 ft long, is built for 15–20 mph, and a 22 ft speed table for 25–30 mph. The length of the device, not its height alone, sets the comfortable speed.
Design speed by device
Choose the device by the speed you need, then sign it to match.
| Device | Height | Length | Design speed | Sign |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Speed bump (2.4 in HD) | 2.4 in | 13.8 in | ≤ 6 mph | W17-1 BUMP |
| Speed bump (3 in modular) | 3 in | 15 in | ≤ 10 mph | W17-1 BUMP |
| Speed hump | 3–4 in | 10–14 ft | 15–20 mph | W17-2 HUMP |
| Speed table | 3–4 in | 22 ft+ | 25–30 mph | W17-2 + plaque |
| Speed cushion | 3–4 in | 6–7 ft pads | 15–20 mph | W17-2 HUMP |
What happens if you take it fast
Impact force rises sharply with speed because the wheel has less time to travel the same vertical distance. In practice that means shock and bushing wear, tire sidewall stress, scraped bumpers and loose cargo — and on a forklift, a shocked mast and a shifted load.
Getting drivers to actually slow down
Full lane width so nobody steers around it, spacing of 150–250 ft so nobody accelerates between crossings, reflective bands facing traffic, and a W17-1 sign 100–200 ft ahead. The device does the enforcing; the sign only sets the expectation.

Frequently asked
How fast can you drive over a speed bump?
5 to 10 mph. A speed bump is 2–4 inches tall over only 12–15 inches of travel, so the rise is abrupt: above about 10 mph the suspension cannot absorb it and the load transfers to tires, shocks and the underbody.
How fast over a speed hump or a speed table?
A speed hump is 10–14 ft long and designed for 15–20 mph. A speed table is 22 ft+ with a flat top and designed for 25–30 mph. The longer the device, the higher the comfortable crossing speed.
Do speed bumps damage cars?
Crossed at the design speed, no. Crossed fast and repeatedly they accelerate wear on shocks, bushings, tires and exhaust hangers, and a low front bumper can contact the ramp. That is the mechanism the device relies on to change behavior.
Is it better to go over a speed bump fast or slow?
Slow. Going fast does not 'skip' the bump — it shortens the impact time, which raises the peak force on the suspension and on anyone in the car. Brake before, ease off during, accelerate after.
How fast can a forklift or a loaded trailer cross?
6 mph or less, over the 2.4 in profile with 13.8 in of travel and a 176,000 lb load rating. Hard, unsprung forklift wheels transmit everything straight into the mast and the load.
What speed does our bump enforce?
The 3 in modular profile with 15 in of travel targets ≤ 10 mph; the 2.4 in steel-plate heavy-duty profile with 13.8 in of travel targets ≤ 6 mph. Both cost $260–$660 in materials per 12 ft lane plus freight.
