Speed bump installation

Installing a bolt-down rubber speed bump takes two people about 30 minutes per 12 ft lane: dry-fit the modules, mark the holes, hammer-drill the asphalt or concrete, and torque the anchors flush. There is no paving contractor, no lane closure and no cure time — total cost is the kit ($260–$660 per lane plus freight) and about an hour of in-house labor, against $1,500–$3,000+ for a poured asphalt hump.

The 4 steps

  1. 1. Position and dry-fit the run

Lay the modules across the lane with a 10 in end cap at each side. Center modules = (lane width in inches − 20 in) ÷ module length. Square the run to the lane and check nothing lands on a joint, a crack or a utility lid.

  2. 2. Mark the anchor holes

Mark through every factory hole with a paint marker, then move the modules aside. Each 39 in module takes 4 anchors, each 20 in module 2, and each end cap 1.

  3. 3. Drill to depth

Hammer-drill each mark with the anchor's specified bit — typically 1/2 in bit, 3 in deep for concrete and 5/8 in for asphalt spikes. Blow the dust out of the hole so the anchor seats.

  4. 4. Set and torque

Reposition, drop in the anchors and torque until the washer sits flush with the rubber. Do not over-torque: the rubber should compress slightly, not dish. Re-check torque after the first week of traffic.

Placement and spacing

  • Parking lots: 150–250 ft apart along drive aisles, at least 25 ft clear of stop bars, turns and crosswalks.
  • Private roads and HOAs: 250–500 ft apart per ITE traffic-calming practice.
  • Docks and yards: 75–150 ft before the apron, never inside a backing area or a trailer swing path.
  • Always: keep ADA accessible routes and fire-lane widths clear, and sign with MUTCD W17-1.

Frequently asked

How long does speed bump installation take?

About 30 minutes per 12 ft lane with two people: dry-fit, mark, drill and torque. There is no cure time, so the lane reopens immediately after the last anchor.

How much does it cost to install speed bumps?

On private property you normally install in-house: $260–$660 in materials per 12 ft lane plus freight, and about an hour of labor. A poured asphalt hump instead runs $1,500–$3,000+ per location because it needs a paving contractor, equipment and cure time.

What tools do I need to install a rubber speed bump?

A rotary hammer drill, the anchor-specified masonry bit, an impact wrench or socket wrench, a tape measure, a paint marker, a broom and safety glasses. Nothing else — no saw cutting, no paving equipment.

Can you install a speed bump on asphalt?

Yes. Asphalt uses longer spike anchors; concrete uses sleeve or wedge anchors. Both are supplied with the kit. Avoid installing over fresh asphalt for the first 30 days while it fully cures.

Do I need a permit to install a speed bump?

Not on private property — parking lots, HOA private roads, warehouse yards and driveways. Public streets require municipal approval and a different device (a hump or table poured to city spec).

Do you install speed bumps, or just supply them?

We supply the kits and the anchor hardware nationwide with the install spec, torque values and layout drawing. Most facility teams install in-house in under an hour per lane; if you need a local contractor, the same drawing is what they quote from.
