Low-clearance vehicles, EVs and vans over speed bumps

Content reviewed 2026-10-20

Short answer

Low cars and EVs scrape when a bump is too tall, crossed too fast or placed on a dip or ramp. Where many low vehicles park, choose the lower 2.4 in profile, place it on flat pavement, mark it clearly and keep the approach smooth.

Placement mistakes that cause scraping

  • Bump at the bottom of a ramp or driveway apron.
  • Bump next to a pothole or broken edge.
  • Missing or loose modules creating a step.
  • No warning, so drivers hit it at speed.

Frequently asked

Are speed bumps bad for electric vehicles?

EVs carry heavy battery packs under the floor and often have low ground clearance. Crossed slowly, a well-placed bump is fine; crossed fast, scraping risk rises. Choose a lower profile where many EVs park and avoid placing bumps where a dip or ramp already reduces clearance.

Which of your profiles is lower?

Our steel-reinforced profile is 2.4 in high and the modular profile is 3 in high. The lower profile is usually the better fit for lots with many low cars; confirm with the drawings before ordering.

What about delivery vans and box trucks?

Loaded vans bounce more and loads can shift. Put bumps away from loading spots and turns, and tell delivery drivers about them.

Do speed bumps damage cars?

Crossed at low speed, a correctly installed rubber bump should not. Damage risk comes from speed, poor placement, loose modules or broken pavement around the device.
