Do speed bumps damage cars?
Short answer
No — not at the right height and the right speed. A 2–3 in bump with 12–15 in of ramped travel, crossed at 5–10 mph, stays within the ground clearance and suspension travel of an ordinary car. Damage comes from crossing fast, or from over-tall, square-edged devices — not from a correctly specified rubber bump.
What decides whether a vehicle is affected
Three variables, in this order: crossing speed, device height, and how long the ramp is. Only the last two are yours to specify.
| Variable | Vehicle-friendly | Where complaints start |
|---|---|---|
| Crossing speed | 5–10 mph | 20 mph and up |
| Height | 2–3 in | Over 4 in |
| Travel (length) | 12–15 in ramped | Short or squared edge |
| Edge treatment | Ramped end caps | Open, abrupt ends |
| Visibility | Reflective bands + sign ahead | Unmarked, after a blind turn |
The two profiles, by vehicle mix
If low-clearance cars, sports cars or emergency vehicles use the lane, go lower and longer. If it is standard cars and light trucks and you need a hard slowdown, the 3 in profile does more work.
| Profile | Height | Best for | Cost per 12 ft lane |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.4 in heavy-duty | 2.4 in | Low cars, trucks, forklifts, mixed heavy traffic | $360–$660 + freight |
| 3 in modular | 3 in | Cars and light trucks, strongest slowdown per dollar | $260–$520 + freight |
What to tell a board or a resident
The complaint is almost always about a specific bump, not about bumps. Check the height with a tape, check whether the warning sign gives drivers enough distance to slow, and check the placement — a bump right after a turn or crest gets hit fast because nobody sees it in time. A correctly specified rubber unit at 5–10 mph is not a vehicle-damage issue, and it is removable if you ever need the lane flat.

Frequently asked
Do speed bumps damage cars?
Not when the bump is the right height and the driver crosses at the posted speed. A 2–3 in bump with 12–15 in of ramped travel, taken at 5–10 mph, is within the suspension travel and ground clearance of ordinary passenger cars. Damage happens when a vehicle crosses fast, or when the device is too tall or has a squared edge.
What speed bump height is safe for low cars?
Lower and longer is safer. A 2.4 in steel-plate profile with 12 in of travel is the gentler of the two profiles we stock and is the usual pick where sports cars, lowered vehicles or ambulances use the lane. The 3 in modular profile slows traffic harder and suits standard cars and light trucks.
Can hitting a speed bump fast damage a car?
Yes, and that is the real cause of most complaints. Crossing at 20–25 mph loads the suspension, can bottom out a low bumper or exhaust, and over time contributes to alignment and shock wear. Crossing at 5–10 mph does not.
Do speed bumps damage cars over time?
Repeated high-speed crossings add wear to shocks, bushings and alignment. Repeated correct-speed crossings are a non-event for the vehicle — which is exactly why the device is sized for 5–10 mph.
Which is gentler on vehicles, rubber or asphalt?
Rubber. A moulded rubber unit has a consistent ramped profile and a little give, while poured asphalt bumps are frequently built too tall, too short in travel or with an abrupt edge, which is where most vehicle complaints come from.
How do we stop residents complaining about vehicle damage?
Use a ramped 2–3 in profile, keep the reflective bands visible, post the MUTCD W17-1 warning sign far enough ahead for drivers to slow, and never place a bump immediately after a blind turn or crest.
