Speed bump objections, answered

Short answer

Five objections stall most votes: noise, emergency access, vehicle damage, snow removal and liability. Each has a specific answer — anchor the unit and place it away from stop points, keep fire-lane clear width and consult the fire marshal on marked fire routes, use a 2–3 in ramped profile at 5–10 mph, unbolt for plow season, and document with reflective bands plus MUTCD W17-1 signage.

The one-page proposal a board can vote on

Number of lanes, lane width, profile and height, spacing plan, material cost per lane plus freight, who installs it, and how long the aisle is out of service (about 30 minutes). Boards approve numbers, not intentions — and every figure on that list is something we put in the quote.

What we will not claim

We do not promise a specific accident reduction on your property; outcomes depend on layout, traffic and how many devices you install. What we can state precisely is the device geometry, the target crossing speed, the delivered cost and the install time.

Frequently asked

Are speed bumps noisy?

The noise people report is mostly braking, acceleration away from the device, and loose or unanchored units rattling. A properly anchored rubber unit crossed at 5–10 mph is quiet compared to a poured asphalt bump, and placing devices away from bedroom windows and stop points reduces the rest.

Do speed bumps delay emergency vehicles?

Any raised device adds some crossing time, which is why fire departments are consulted on public streets and on designated fire-response routes. On private drive aisles, low 2–3 in bumps at 10 mph are generally accepted — confirm with your local fire marshal for lanes marked as fire access, and keep the required clear width.

What about snow plows?

The units have ramped end caps so a blade can ride over them, and because they are bolted rather than poured you can unbolt the modules for the season in about 20 minutes per lane and reinstall into the same anchor holes.

Will the association be liable if someone damages a car?

The usual risk-management answer is documentation: a standard-height device, reflective bands, MUTCD W17-1 warning signage far enough ahead, sound placement away from blind turns, and a dated install record. That is what demonstrates a good-faith, reasonable traffic-calming effort.

Someone says bumps just move the speeding elsewhere.

That is a spacing issue. A single device creates one slow point; devices spaced 150–250 ft apart along the aisle do not leave room to accelerate in between.

What if the board wants to try before committing?

Install one lane. At $260–$660 in materials plus freight, and because it unbolts, a single-lane trial is a genuine option — then expand to the rest of the property on the same pallet program.
