Speed bumps for parking garages
Content reviewed 2026-10-20
Short answer
Garage decks are often post-tensioned, so never drill without the structural engineer's approval and a slab scan. Place bumps on flat landings near ramps, stair doors and elevator lobbies, not on ramp break points, and seal every hole the way the membrane contractor specifies.
Before anyone drills
- Ask the owner for the structural drawings and engineer contact.
- Confirm whether the deck is post-tensioned or slab on grade.
- Scan each anchor location and mark tendons.
- Agree how holes are sealed through the traffic membrane.
- Get written approval for the locations.
Where to place them
Focus on spots where drivers and walkers meet.
| Location | Why | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Ramp landings | Drivers accelerate off ramps | Flat area, not the break point |
| Stair and elevator doors | Pedestrians step out between cars | Pair with marked walkway |
| Exit lanes | Speeding toward the street | Keep gate detectors clear |
| Ground level slab on grade | Fewer drilling limits | Still locate utilities |
Clearance and lighting
Garages are darker than open lots. Choose a high-visibility yellow and black profile, keep markings fresh and make sure the bump is lit. Check vehicle clearance on ramps before choosing between our 2.4 in and 3 in profiles.

Frequently asked
Can I drill speed bumps into a parking garage deck?
Only after the owner's structural engineer approves it. Many elevated decks are post-tensioned: cutting a tensioned tendon is dangerous and costly. Scan the slab (GPR or similar) before any hole is drilled.
Where do speed bumps help in a garage?
At the bottom and top of ramps, before pedestrian doors, stairs and elevator lobbies, and at exits where drivers speed up toward the street.
Will a speed bump damage the waterproofing membrane?
Drilling through a traffic membrane can let water reach the slab. Ask the engineer or membrane contractor how holes must be sealed, or whether a different location is better.
What about low-clearance vehicles on ramps?
Avoid placing a bump at the break point of a ramp where cars already bottom out. Put it on the flat landing instead.
