How to anchor speed bumps on asphalt vs concrete
Content reviewed 2026-10-20
Short answer
Concrete holds expansion or wedge anchors firmly. Asphalt is softer and moves with heat, so it usually needs longer lag spikes or bonded anchors and pavement in good condition. Check the surface first, then follow the exact anchor instructions for your product and surface.
Asphalt vs concrete at a glance
The surface decides the fastener, not the other way around.
| Question | Concrete | Asphalt |
|---|---|---|
| Typical anchor style | Expansion / wedge anchor | Longer lag spike or bonded anchor |
| Main risk | Hitting rebar or cables in slabs | Anchors loosening in soft or hot pavement |
| Check first | Cracks, slab type, embedded steel | Thickness, base layer, alligator cracking |
| Re-check after | Seasonal inspection | First hot season and every inspection |
Check the pavement before you order
- Walk the line where each bump will sit and photograph cracks.
- Confirm the surface type and, for concrete, whether it is a slab on grade or an elevated deck.
- Probe a test hole in asphalt to confirm depth to the base.
- Repair failed sections before installing.
- Locate utilities, drains and detector loops near the line.
Questions to ask your installer
- Which anchor, drill diameter and embedment will you use on this surface?
- Will you use adhesive or sealant in the holes?
- How will you protect the work area and when can traffic return?
- Who re-tightens or replaces anchors after the first season?

Frequently asked
Can I use the same anchors on asphalt and concrete?
Not always. Concrete holds expansion or wedge-style anchors well. Asphalt is softer and can creep, so installers usually use longer lag-style spikes or a bonded anchor. Follow the product's anchor instructions for each surface.
How do I know if my asphalt is too thin?
Core or probe a test hole. If the anchor would bottom out in the base layer or the surface is cracked, alligatored or soft, repair the pavement first. Anchors in failing asphalt loosen quickly.
Do I need adhesive as well as bolts?
Some installers add a bonded anchor or sealant in the hole on asphalt or in wet climates. Ask what they plan to use and why, and confirm it fits the manufacturer's instructions.
Is drilling into a parking garage slab the same?
No. Elevated and post-tensioned slabs can contain tensioned steel cables. Never drill without the structural engineer's approval and a scan. See our parking garage guide.
