Speed bump markings and paint
Content reviewed 2026-10-19
Short answer
A speed bump should be visible day and night before a driver or pedestrian reaches it. On private property that usually means high-contrast yellow and black, reflective elements, and a warning sign placed ahead. Molded rubber units have color built in, so the job is keeping it clean and replacing worn parts, not repainting.
What makes a bump visible
We supply rubber speed bumps with built-in yellow sections. We do not sell signs or paint; this table is here so you can plan the full set.
| Element | Purpose | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow/black contrast | Seen in daylight from a distance | Clean, not faded |
| Reflective inserts or tape | Seen in headlights at night | Present and bright |
| Warning sign ahead | Time to slow down | Upright, not blocked |
| Pavement marking before the bump | Extra cue on approach | Repainted when worn |
Pedestrians matter too
People trip on devices they do not see. Keep devices off marked accessible routes and walkways, and make sure the ends of each device are clearly marked where people step around them.
Keep a simple record
Note the date of each check and any fix. If someone ever files a claim, a dated record of inspections and repairs is the most useful thing a property owner can show.

Frequently asked
What color should speed bumps be?
High-contrast yellow, usually alternating with black, is the common choice on private property because it stands out against asphalt and concrete. Public streets follow the agency's own marking standards, generally based on the MUTCD.
Do rubber speed bumps need painting?
Molded rubber units usually come with yellow sections or reflective inserts built in, so they do not need paint when new. Paint can peel off flexible rubber; refresh visibility by replacing worn reflective elements instead.
Do I need a warning sign?
It is good practice. Place a sign ahead of the device so drivers see it in time to slow, and add one at each entrance to the area. Many liability claims involve devices that were hard to see.
How often should markings be checked?
Look at them during every routine inspection and after winter. Replace or refresh anything faded, dirty or missing before it becomes hard to see at night.
