Speed bumps and snow plows
Content reviewed 2026-10-19
Short answer
Straight plow blades catch bolted speed bumps, tearing modules loose and damaging the plow. In snow regions, unbolt rubber modules on plowed lanes in the fall, cap the anchors, and reinstall in spring. Where you keep devices, mark them with snow stakes and give your contractor a map.
Remove, keep or mark
Decide lane by lane before the first storm.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Lane plowed with a truck blade | Unbolt modules for the season, cap anchors |
| Lane cleared by hand or with a brush | Keep, mark with snow stakes |
| Pedestrian-heavy entrance you must slow | Keep, mark, tell the contractor to lift the blade |
| Region with rare snow | Keep, mark, remove only before a forecast storm |
Fall checklist
- Map every device and number it.
- Unbolt modules on plowed lanes and store them flat.
- Cap or plug the anchor holes.
- Put snow stakes at both ends of any device left in place.
- Give the map to the snow contractor and add it to the contract.
Spring reinstall
Clean out the anchor holes, check them for cracking, replace damaged hardware and reinstall. This is a good moment to run the full inspection checklist and refresh faded markings.

Frequently asked
Can you plow over speed bumps?
Not safely with a straight steel blade. The blade can catch the leading edge, tear modules loose and damage the plow. Contractors often refuse to plow lanes with unmarked devices or charge for repairs.
Should I remove rubber speed bumps for winter?
In regions with regular plowing, yes for most lanes. Bolted rubber modules can be unbolted in the fall and reinstalled in spring. Keep the anchors capped so they do not fill with water and ice.
What if I need speed control in winter too?
Keep devices only on lanes the contractor can avoid or clear by hand, mark them with tall snow stakes, and give the contractor a site map. Removable profiles make it practical to keep some and lift others.
When should I talk to my snow contractor?
Before the first storm. Walk the site, mark every device on a map, agree which lanes are plowed and which are cleared another way, and write it into the contract.
